چکیده

A Monte Carlo simulation, based on GEANT4, has been developed to compute the contribution of first-order, second-order, and higher order scattering in a Computed Tomography (CT) system equipped with an industrial 450 kV X-ray tube and an area detector. The validation of simulation against the experimental data showed a good agreement. The amount of scattering produced by several hollow aluminum cylinders was simulated. It is shown that the scatter-toprimary ratio (SPR) is approximately 5 % for the aluminum cylinder of outer diameter of 75 mm, 16 % for the diameter of 100 mm, 91 % for the diameter of 150 mm, and for the diameter of 200 mm it can rise to 230 % in the regions corresponding to the maximum path length. Therefore, the scatter from the object significantly affects quantitative accuracy. Furthermore, the background scatter has been experimentally investigated. The results show that the background scatter plays an important role and has to be reduced using collimators.

Compensators for dose and scatter management in cone-beam computed tomography.

The ability of compensators (e.g., bow-tie filters) designed for kV cone-beam computed tomography (CT) to reduce both scatter reaching the detector and dose to the patient is investigated. Scattered x rays reaching the detector are widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges to cone-beam CT imaging performance. With cone-beam CT gaining popularity as a method of guiding treatmen...

Refinement of Imaging Processing of Scatter Correction and Beam Hardening Tools for Industrial Radiography and Cone Beam CT

Digital detector arrays are used for industrial radiography and cone beam CT. Scattering and beam hardening artifacts reduce the achievable contrast sensitivity and can severely limit the size of the part to be scanned or require large amounts of shielding to block scatter outside the inspection area of interest. Varian’s image processing toolkit contains a set of dll’s that can easily be deplo...

Characterization of scattered radiation in kV CBCT images using Monte Carlo simulations.

Kilovoltage (kV) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images suffer from a substantial scatter contribution. In this study, Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are used to evaluate the scattered radiation present in projection images. These predicted scatter distributions are also used as a scatter correction technique. Images were acquired using a kV CBCT bench top system. The EGSnrc MC code was used...

Monte Carlo simulations of a high-resolution X-ray CT system for industrial applications

An X-ray computed tomography (CT) model based on the GEANT4 Monte Carlo code was developed for simulation of a cone-beam CT system for industrial applications. The full simulation of the X-ray tube, object, and area detector was considered. The model was validated through comparison with experimental measurements of different test objects. There is good agreement between the simulated and measu...
